  • dionysus67's rating of the film Ava & Gabriel: A Love Story

Excellent reconstruction of colonial Antilles which manages to discuss the strains of tolerance and repression through a story about art and a loving couple, whose union celebrates and simultaneously subverts Christian iconography. The acting is very good, the cinematography captures beautifully the pastel surrooundings and the aesthetic form reaches its climax in a motherly black Madonna. De Rooy's best film!
