Now that Levinson’s career is in (terminal?) decline, we can look back on this as his ballsiest movie and greatest labour of love, and perhaps the film that ended his creative patch because he had nothing left to say.

For this viewer, Levinson really only made one film: 1990’s Avalon. It’s the film I would argue he was put on this earth to make, the one he had to make. Films don’t have to be easily identifiable personal statements to be worthy, but some films are worthy because of the power of the personal voices they offer. By this token, Avalon is an unusually subjective and culturally specific Hollywood film…
