In so many of the other films on this list, music expresses dreams of peace and a better world. But it effectively becomes a weapon of war in Carlos Saura’s historical drama about a trio of traveling musicians trapped behind enemy lines during the Spanish Civil War… It’s a thought expressed most vividly by the title piece, a popular folk song of the Spanish Republican Army.
