Synopsis

In a remote Senegalese village, Adama rejects his hereditary right to be the village chief, content instead to live in private marital bliss with Banel. However, their independence is challenged when a deadly drought strikes, putting their love and devotion to the test.

Our take

Hot, dusty winds blast patrilineal practices in Ramata-Toulaye Sy’s debut feature about ardent lovers, who burn to be together in a warming world. Beautiful compositions—in hues of ochre and inky blue—swell this village-small story to a mythic scale, and announce this young director as one to watch.
