Solid debut feature from director Eva Husson whose intent here may be murky for some but her power to convey beautiful image is very clear. Those getting hung up on the open sexuality here or thinking its a modern safe sex/abstinence p.s.a are severely missing the point. Husson's film is a universal take on teenage detachment and burgeoning sexuality but in a modern context of forced apathy and impersonal technology.
Beautiful actors + photography in this softcore porn drama, based on a "true story" (often a recipe for disaster in a film). True or not, teenagers trying to fuck away their teen ennui just isn't interesting. 3 stars anyway for the production value and the talented young actors (especially Marilyn Lima) who are not to blame for a weak story. A line at the end sums it up: "It's all so profoundly mediocre".
Unprotected sex is dangerous because you suffer from STD. Shooting sex video is dangerous because your life is ruined if it leaks on internet. This movie is kind of cheap sex-ed movie which I was forced to see when I was high school student, isn't it....No? you said this is A Modern Love Story? oh c'mon......
I can't stop thinking about Gus Van Sant by watching this...BUT il y a un truc vraiment français, une mélancolie propre à ces lieux, (enfin une mélancolie qui n'est pas de Paris...) la chair est triste, la perte de l'innocence aussi.
I wish I could give it more. But all of it is average: the dialogue, the sexual depiction ( if effective ), the script, the turning point, the shallow characters and dialogue. It's really disappointing because there are tons of seeds of good stuff in; instead it turns into an adult fantasy about teenagers ( who tend to be ultra conservative, which does not preclude libertine ) Also, everybody looks way too good.
Acting and cinematography is nice. The reason why the film has been received as a soft-porn can be the director's focus on the orgies. But still, it can be sensed that the director is a woman. Maybe, if the perspective of the director were stronger and more focused, the film would be deeper and more meaningful.
A bit predictable but still somehow believable. It's not a movie with a strong social message and you might not relate to the at-times-sort-of-posh-kids but the acting is quite good and the "uncensored" sex scenes worked for me.
Not a bad movie, if you're looking for something light-hearted and think back to your early teenage years, give this film a try.
Would give 3.5 stars if I could.
Visually stunning, coming-of-age movie that despite its heavy subject manages to avoid being distressing, dark and gloomy. The actors were brilliant. Bonus points also for the dreamy, haze-like soundtrack!
