One of those rare shows that truly got better with each season - the final season is outstanding, not only in diverging and advancing the traditional Norman Bates story, but in the brilliant direction. It ultimately gets so dark, I don't know that I'll be anxious to revisit often, but it is an undeniably great show with quality far exceeding what I anticipated when the show debuted. One of the best of recent years.
The idea of exploring the early, formative years of Norman Bates is one of those concepts that could have easily led to disaster - particularly with the decision to adapt the story to the present day - but two superbly cast leads, a very "Twin Peaks"-esque setting in the Pacific Northwest, and a more nuanced exploration of mental illness managed to keep this on the right side of dark and intriguing for five seasons.
