You know, I do love BRICK, but this movie ended up being the better way to do a modern noir, never winking or wading around in tropes. TOMORROW is more like the Coen Bros in its noir pastiche, finding a touchstone in those conventions but powering through them with sheer grittiness and cynicism. Where BRICK put a teenage Marlowe in a dreamworld, LUCK gets to the heart of noir: bad decisions and people beyond helping.
Mix a typical high-school story & add the energy of a Scorsese/Tarantino, through the lens of Asian Americans, & you'll get the high-quality debut of Justin Lin. Forgoing any significant adult figures, it naturally was called an endorsement of bad behavior by the closed-minded. However, this film is an exciting dark comedy/tragedy that hooks you from the start.
