***1/2. Richard Brooks tells us once again the story of How the West Was Won but goes straight to the fundamentals. In a résumé of 700 miles and one week time, the director wants us to understand how an egoist mentality can turn into empathy and the creation of an American Citizen. Recommended.
Great western. Great chemistry between the leads. Beautiful cinematography. What more can you want? I thought the way the ending was done was very cool and creative. Hackman and Coburn chew up the scenery in every scene they are in, and Bergen holds her own in a very good early role. One of the last great westerns. Worth a look
