Joseph Balsamo, a poor French gypsy with a tragic past, is taken under the wing of Dr. Mesmer who teaches him the secrets of hypnosis. While Balsamo promises the doctor that he will use the power only to help others, he instead abuses his gift in order to steal money and forge a powerful reputation.

Black Magic Directed by Gregory Ratoff, Orson Welles

Critics reviews

The film is flamboyant, hyperbolic, and cheerily self-conscious with regards to storytelling. Orson Welles, who stars and directed several scenes uncredited, clearly had a grand time making it; his artistic persona so permeates the film that you might think he directed the whole thing.
