After futon salesman Bob Funk’s alcoholism and acerbic attitude cause his own mother to fire him, he tries to get his life together and reclaim his job. But his attraction to the woman who’s replaced him complicates everything.

Several caricatures and predictable moments (particularly an opening third too afraid of making the lead unlikable without relying on pratfalls and forced comedic interchanges) weaken what becomes a pretty good look at one person's road to accepting himself (without using the spiritually euphoric or eureka moments that many of these types of movies rely on: changes that, in reality, are short-lived).
