To penetrate a gang exploiting illegal Mexican farmworkers smuggled into California (and leaving no live witnesses), Mexican federal agent Pablo Rodriguez poses as an ignorant bracero, while his American counterpart Jack Bearnes works from outside. Soon, both are in deadly danger.

One can stop the film at any point during THE FAR COUNTRY and understand its psychological undertones, be it a lone character against a mountainous horizon or several characters situated by thematic hierarchy. The filmic landscape of the Western is as wide as the terrain it’s set in, and THE FAR COUNTRY finds man using more frigid territory with which to explore more manifest behaviorism.

Stunning shots keep coming to the rescue (despite the occasional dodgy day-for-night) whenever the plot threatens to become generic – and the studio may have intended one of those torn-from-the-headlines, social-issue movies that were all the rage in the late 40s but Mann skews the documentary style into something like a noir Western, the noir coming in seamy brutality and shades of grey both visual and dramatic…
