BROADWAY BY LIGHT

Directed by William Klein
France, United States, 1958
Avant-Garde, Short

Synopsis

Broadway, New York City, 1950s. The flashing bulbs and neons of Times Square adverts and the silhouettes of men at work on theatre marquees re-arranging letters on the lightboxes—poised like acrobats on their stepladders—create a kaleidoscopic light show.

Our take

Renowned filmmaker-photographer William Klein died in 2022, leaving behind a career built out of eclectic, visually extraordinary subjects. His first film, Broadway by Light, is an avant-garde short intoxicated by the colorful, abstract and pop potential of Manhattan’s neon light shows.
