The tendency might be to come down hard on Debbie Reynolds specifically (Doris Day 2.0?) and 1950s sham innocence in general. Too easy. Low hanging fruit aside, have you actually ever carefully studied Debbie Reynolds? I am reluctant to call what she does an expression of craft. But for certain: she is busy, dynamic, and fascinating. BUNDLE OF JOY is just lovely stupid musical-comedy sublimity, but deeply insane.
