Shimizu’s early classic of independent Japanese cinema features a group of war orphans initially seen scratching out an existence through black market work, as they are taken under the wing of a nameless soldier, just repatriated after the war.

I'm the first to write a comment on this film!? It's an incredible masterpiece. Like any other Hiroshi Shimizu, but with an added bonus of a neo-realism touch. Although whether he was influenced by Italian films is unknown, the resemblance is uncanny. It's a bittersweet tale on street children in post-war Japan. We also get to see the devastated city of Hiroshima. If you haven't seen this, find it!
