Critics reviews

Joan Micklin Silver’s film is a veritable downer symphony, making use of every available tone and register of disappointment: thirtysomething and middle-aged, masculine and feminine. And it’s funny, too! – that is, if you can get down with the recriminatory laughter of bitter self-recognition that comes on like a smoker’s cough.

A superb director, Silver brings the same light touch that she did to the likewise excellent Hester Street and Crossing Delancey, and Heard is her equal with his spurts of cruelty and laughing asides to himself: “What a winsome guy!”
