An angel falls for Meg Ryan, but the film ends up with a strange message. Is it God's will that love is best when it is a one-night stand and bonds are severed straight away afterwards? Nicolas Cage plays the Angel and he comes across as a creep in the start too. Not a very good remake this one.
Hard not to compare to 'Wings of Desire', which it inevitably suffers next to. Cage is endearing and at his most restrained. Only the "pricky pear" part might be regarded as a Cageism. While the film lacks the soft-glazed beauty of Wenders’ original and some of its emotive motifs are over-determined, everyone involved seems sincere about the project – which is generally all you can ask from a Hollywood remake.
