Delicately poised between control (Byrkit’s storyline) and chaos (the improv acting), Coherence so energetically manages a near-cacophony of ideas and information that it all but implodes under its own density – and that too is appropriate to its premise. Coherence suggests that all fictional universes are parallel universes in any case, and that our own universe is as much a fiction, perhaps even a pre-written drama, as any other.

Coherence is more a speculative and elegantly chaotic sci-fi riff than a satisfyingly enclosed narrative, yet plaudits (and then some) are still due to its first time writer/director, James Ward Byrkit, as it’s an insanely ambitious tale of a dinner party that quickly and unavoidably goes south.

I got actual chills later on, at key moments of revelation, as “This Person Is Not Who I Thought They Were” becomes very literal… Here’s the puzzle film at its purest: momentarily scintillating enough to bypass the banality of its players, a scenario whose adroit unfolding trumps the emotions it supposedly illuminates.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Coherence

Attack of the tacky rack focus! Fleeting creativity undone by novice execution. Unfocused characterization, talking-pointed dialogue that’s useless for storytelling. The low-budget (made for 50k) shows and because I’ve seen far more done with less that seems high considering. The same year’s +1 is far better and is the work of a blossoming auteur, not like the film school experiment that Coherence typifies.

  • Kamran's rating of the film Coherence

Contrived ending aside, this is a thoughtful, well presented, and intriguing sci-fi film which exceeded my expectations. Guised as the 'supernatural', Coherence sharply offers an allegory of a long strange (psychedelic) trip. The experience is more acutely realized here than in your average science fiction mind-fuck film. 83/100 - Great.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Coherence

I have an agreement with my doppelganger that we won't to try to kill each other. These things need to be worked out ahead of time so you don't make rash decisions when you aren't thinking clearly. If other people haven't figured out their shit, then you need to find a safe place.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Coherence

Mind-bending, like Primer. A masterfully complex plot that keeps unfolding onto itself. Seemless and quite coherent indeed. Everything that usually thrillers are not. All the surprises are in the right places, and they are meaningful. A good story, a original premise. All good. And, as it is going, you do get eager to see it happen in front of you. It creates tension and uses it quite wonderfully. Nicelly done.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Coherence

I found it too confusing to be truly enjoyable. I understand things were headed for total chaos, with the discovery of not just two but multiple parallel realities colliding... However it got confusing right with the introduction of the second house. It could have benefited from a smaller cast, but it sure challenges you the entire time and triggers a healthy discussion in the end. Maybe I'll come back to it someday.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Coherence

Picked this up on blu ray on a whim, and was blown away. Shot on a shoe string but teeming with ambition and ideas that Hollywood power players wished they had. This movie shows that great cinema doesn't have to cost a trillion dollars. The plot is a real mind bender and reminds me of Shane Carruth's Primer at times but has a definite voice of its own. A must-see movie!!! Can't wait to see what Byrkit does next.

  • Tigrão's rating of the film Coherence

Mind = fucked. I'm starting to think that if I keep watching too many films like that, my brain's just gonna shut off and I'll be senile at 40.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Coherence

That saturday-night-fun kind of movie. Nice cast, nice plot... nice twits. I got so envolved it seemed a 30 minute movie. Well played!
