She is the victim because of her disease, but since that is never enough for a woman, she was also a victim of rape. Once again, a completely unnecessary path that contributes with less than 1% to the story. It's really sad when a movie is touching and beautifully moving until it falls into the same bullshit as too many others do. So keep being original.
Frankly a disappointment coming from Zhang Yimou who doesn't usually exhibit maudlin, manipulative tendencies like those shown here. Daoming Chen and Gong Li are both unable to overcome the melodramatic scripting nor the unfortunate old age makeup eventually applied. Fairing better is young Huiwen Zhang who makes a memorable debut.
Despite the tenacious melodramatic tones, a beneficial aspect is that the script, adapted by Jingzhi Zou from the novel ‘The Criminal Lu Yanshi’ by Geling Yan, doesn’t take us to the most obvious places.
Not up for competition at Cannes last year, but easily swept me away from anything even nearly approaching the film on display here. Evocative performances, and a very tight story from Yimou. This is a must see for me.
