Synopsis

A New York playwright is summoned to Ireland to bury his father (his “Da”). While at his boyhood home, he encounters his father’s spirit and relives memories both pleasant and not.

Da’s most moving scene comes near the end, when Charlie confronts his father just as his dotage turns into full-blown senility. The old man mistakes his son for his late wife’s father, and speaks to him as he once spoke while requesting her hand in marriage. Thus, the father asks his son the permission of marrying his mother… and elicits consent for the son’s existence from the son himself. It’s a beautiful moment, as simple in execution as it’s convoluted in implications…
