Heavy going and completely devoid of even a hint of humour, Dark River treads the familiar path of returning home to confront old demons. Ruth Wilson's character is a nice mix of strength and frailty that embodies effectively the hardship of modern farming. The cinematography is perfunctory and felt like it needed to go a bit further to tease out the world. Bleak 3 stars
In spite of Ruth Wilson's excellent performance as Alice, the film is somewhat melodramatic and lacking in surprises as Clio Bernard (A Selfish Giant) wheels out a descending set of depressing incidents as the farm falls into bankruptcy and Alice recalls her childhood abuse and rape by her father.
