Whatever its shortcomings, George Wells’s script is right up Minnelli’s alley. Designing Woman is a semi-screwball marriage comedy that masks serious concerns beneath inane antics. Minnelli’s skill set usually left him with material that straddled the border between the fine focus of the women’s picture and the big-budget spectacular, and Designing Woman is one of the clearest examples of that combination, telling a relatable story of male/female friction imbued with frantic grandiosity.
