Synopsis

Juli grows into adulthood and becomes a director in the shadow of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Coming from the intelligentsia, she sees her entourage react differently to the revolution. While some take part in the events, others are angry at the rebels. But soon the brutal Soviet repression begins.

Our take

Arguably the most political of Mészáros’s Diary films, this remarkable blend of archival footage and dramatic recreations reflects on the overlaps between the personal and the historical. Mészáros makes us witnesses once more to the traumas of history through the marks it leaves on a family.
