Synopsis

The recession of the 1980s split the country into the haves and have nots, from family farmers to factory workers and homeless people forced to live in decrepit welfare hotels. On the verge of losing everything, courageous Americans discover the power of community organizing to fight injustice.

Our take

A grand indictment of the cruelty of Reaganomics, Lee Grant’s Oscar®-winning triumph scales the wealth gap plaguing both rural and metropolitan America during the 1980s. Markedly intersectional in its approach, the film champions the grassroots movements that rail against institutional indifference.
