Handsomely produced but poorly cast take on the classic Stevenson novel. Compares so poorly to the '31 and '20 versions. Spencer Tracy gives a course in overacting in a performance he didn't even like. Poor Ingrid Bergman in one of her early Hollywood turns fares poorly as well with her Swedish Cockney accent!!!
Forget the accents (Spencer speaks Spencer, Bergman cockney by way of Sweden): this is a dark, beautiful, sexy movie, a visual tour de force, a meditation on the allure of evil, and risque as all hell for 1941: before Hyde makes her his sex slave, Bergman's bar girl tries to seduce Jekyll in her bedroom in a scene that must have caused a lot of collars to steam. Terrific.

The first movie I watched on the subject when I was a teenager. It is a quite good adaptation from the novel. Maybe too polished, typified and overplayed to be really convincing. I prefere the twisted nightmarish version of Borowzyck or "Hands of the ripper" by the Hammer prod.
