Some interesting bits with hypnosis in that it tries to reconcile science with myth by way of abnormal psychology -but what any of it has to do with the vampire myth I don't know. Also, too much stupid comedic shit with Van Helsing and the police. The unrealized James Whale version sounds incredible though.
IT JUST DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL. This direct sequel has no energy, no real pace or real reason to exist. Planned as an A picture helmed by James Whale, it was eventually rushed and poor Lugosi was cast out. The result is a dragging bore that even the photography cannot save. Poor Edward Van Sloan isn't even able to muster up the energy in Van Helsing anymore. A sad end to the Golden Age of Horror.
Noteworthy sequel as it possibly kick-started the entire lesbian vampire genre as there is clearly lust in this female vampire's eyes when she attacks her female victim. Should have been at least a flashback or some involvement where Bela Lugosi's Dracula is involved explaining why she is "his daughter". Van Helsing do at least return but since it is now 1930s he also has to be a member of the undead.
