With all due respect to Gavin Millar, the auteur of Dreamchild is most definitely Dennis Potter. The frame story set in the 1930s is uneven, but is held together by Coral Browne as Alice Hargreaves. The flashbacks to mid-nineteenth century Oxford are as close to perfection as can be expected in a historical recreation.
