Brilliant cinematic rendering of classic American play - done simply, directly, and with all the sweat & soul & poetry of Amiri Baraka's original text itself..the fact that a white director could sincerely "identify" with the subject matter and yet step back and allow Freeman to take the reigns is a huge achievement. Often white directors patronize; Baraka himself was pleased with Harvey's adaptation.
