On it's own, EL MARIACHI is not a great film. What makes it great is what went into it, the passion, the creativity, and the spirit of making your own damn movie by any means necessary. This is what makes EL MARIACHI a great film.
A extremely low budget film that works just as good as a multi- million dollar action film. Rodriguez may not be in the league of great directors but he sure is an inspirational one to beginning filmmakers.
I was just about to say the same thing. But as for "EL Mariachi" although i myself am not a fan of Rodriguez you definitely have to commend him for his passion for film. He hits all the right notes in this film and shows us how to make good film when you HAVE to cut corners.
I think Desperado is a film that's so bad it's good. This film, though, is what genre movies should be: engaging and stylised without taking itself too seriously or too blithely. The opening ten minutes are particularly great.
