Jean Painlevé a ici une inoubliable formule (non "classée X", malgré les apparences...) : "Qui suce, sera sucé" ! En gros, la nature ne fait pas de cadeaux et les tueurs d'un moment seront bientôt tués à leur tour, par des méthodes peu ragoûtantes. Qu'ils le fassent sur du jazz entraînant n'y change rien : observés de près, ces assassins d'eau douce sont effrayants, étranges, souvent fascinants.

MUBI has shown a dozen of Painleve's films and what's noticeable is how different the post war films sound like from his 30s films. The postwar films have a lot of jazz, which goes well with his witty commentary and adds an interesting dynamic. The music shouldn't work but its perfect.

I'm not sure what to say. Somehow Jean Painlevé made watching water insects for 22 minutes interesting. The different shots, the jazz music, the factual learning. So many great elements to this short. It's a rare documentary that not only entertained me but also taught me. Do watch!

A very nice way to make a documentary about nature and animals. Music can results out of theme but it brings a fresh touch in the movie. How natural events are explained and shown is literally perfect. Some of the ultra-macro images are astonishing and all of the recordings are presented with beautiful pictures.
