Great supporting cast, Cagney's great and overall a relatively nice piece in the golden age gangster puzzle, but since the film was made as a reaction to criticism that gangster films glorify criminals, it sucks a little spirit out of it, and leaves it without any potentially legendary or interesting scenes à la The Public Enemy or White Heat. Thank god there's no educational crap (at least as far I could spot).
A tight gripping little gangster picture with Cagney playing quasi against type (reformed gangster turned copper this time). Some good shoot out scenes and perhaps the most engaging gangster pic since Scarface. Great supporting cast round out the proceedings. An underappreciated gem in Cagneys catalog. 4.5 stars
