There's no denying the quality of Boseman's performance but ultimately 'Get On Up' is a very generic music biopic. Like most, it worries too much about rushing through events instead of trying to capture a moment. In the end, the portrait given is poorly layered.
This movie bounced around & was so choppy that it made it really hard to care. It went through the motions, ticked every box it needed to without joining the dots. This is one of those films that tries to do too much and ends up doing very little. Also, Chadwick Boseman's James Brown voice made it really hard to pick up any of the dialogue. There are some quite nice shots, but all in all not the best film of 2014
3+. I usually don't like biopics, and am not fond of 'black music' but i have to admit this one is very good! Especially for melomaniac/music lover. And this Chadwick Boseman... !!! Just totally possessed! Impressive performance!
