Gloria is a 58 year old divorcée. Her children have all left home but she has no desire to spend her days and nights alone. Determined to defy old age and loneliness, she rushes headlong into a whirl of singles’ parties on the hunt for instant gratification…
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
Wow. Having seen only this one of his films, I dare say Lelio is the Cassavetes of our time, not that this Gloria reminds me Gena Rowlands' one at all, it's just the way he lets you see the characters' emotions, their little outbursts of freedom, that feel so intimate and so exciting... it's amazing. And I think this Gloria is arguably the best character to ever exist in a film.
Such an honest and playful performance by an amazing actress about a moment in life that we don't think too much about, but once you see this movie you're gonna wonder what are you going to search for being happy once you're 50 and divorced. No cliches, feels like I'm looking at my mother.
Paulina Garcia gives an incredible performance as the title character here giving us a peak at middle age romantic aspirations, heartache and desperation that we surely don't want to find ourselves. The problem is the lack of levity and the despair and depression we wind up wallowing in...though for some that might be the films' best attributes. Being marketed in North America as a feel good romantic comedy...why?
When i grow up, i wanna be like Gloria: singing along to pop songs while driving my car to work, smoking weed, having awesome passionate sex, getting so drunk i forget where i am and dancing as a single at weddings.
Paulina García's unforgettable tour de force takes us to all kinds of feelings in this insightful & poignant dramedy that gracefully avoids all banal sentimentality. Let's all joyfully dance Gloria with her.
A good idea and an interesting depiction of the tumultous life of a middle aged woman. One brilliant family scene. A great actress, too. But in between a lot of very long, not very enriching cinematographic moments.
