Egoyan keeps all the temporal balls he’s juggling aloft and plainly visible, so the porous borders between Veronica’s perception and a reality that deviated from that perception by a tiny but crucial degree are painfully known to the viewer.

The movie is consistently seductive, and it makes lovely use of a composition by Shannon Graham that is woven into Veronica’s work as a music teacher. But several story shortcuts — not least an implausibly profuse monologue by Jim — ensure that the characters’ anguish feels more constructed than organic.

Like The Captive and Remember, Guest of Honour is sort of a ridiculous movie, and yet the things holding it together—above all its maker’s faith in the principles and possibilities of narrative as a restless, ever-shifting experiment in architecture—are worth taking seriously.
