Based on a true story, István Szabó’s Hanussen centers on an Austrian soldier (Klaus Maria Brandauer) who becomes clairvoyant after he is shot in the head during World War I.
1989 | Nominee: Best Foreign Language Film
1990 | Nominee: Best Foreign Film
Disappointing closer of Szabó's 'German' trilogy. Embarrassingly mediocre directing, lots of anachronisms. More importantly, Szabó omits a crucial detail from the story – the fact Hanussen was a Jew –, which nullifies all the revelatory pretensions.
