A morbid comedy and predecessor to the also bitingly satirical Mean Girls. Veronica Sawyer is so appalled by the snobbish behavior of her clique that she joins her rebellious boyfriend, J.D in a plot to murder them and disguise the deaths as suicides.

One of those movies you don't know how you feel about but it leaves an impact on you. It is definitely a black comedy, as Winona Ryder and Christian Slater literally kill popular girls at their school. Its very entertaining to watch them do this. Christian Slater with a sound in his voice that you can't help but think Jack Nicholson, and Winona Ryder is very hot. It is totally an 80s movie, but it is like no other.
Lehmann's debut promised a career that was never forthcoming. Witty script that seemed subversive in '88 and in today's political climate unthinkable. Ryder was perfectly cast as Veronica and Slater doing a full on Nicholson impression entertaining. Droll, macabre and often funny with a ton of quotable dialogue. With a little sex thrown in and a Baltimore setting instead, it could have been a John Waters movie.
Clearly the best teen movie ever, a big "fuck you" to those obnoxious John Hughes protagonists. All the 80s excess doesn't merely date the film it adds a weird, dream like bent with the garish colours, high shoulder pads and cheesy synths at odds with its pitch black heart
Re-watching Heathers, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny, modern, rebellious, and prescient the film is. Heathers is a film that refuses to give in to mass conformism and confronts the fundamental authoritarianism that exists not only in high school but in the world. It's a great film & it holds up superbly not only as one of the great coming of age and high school films but also as one of the best of the 1980s.
