Becky Something, a maniacally destructive punk rock star who pushes her relationships with bandmates, family and followers to the limit as she wages a years long war against sobriety while attempting to re-engage the creativity that had once led her band to massive crossover success.

The film has its strengths, especially in Moss’ high-octane performance, Sean Price Williams’ terrific cinematography and some very creative sound design. But the whole thing ends up feeling pointless, overlong and too much like other, better rock movies.

A histrionic and operatic ballad of manic depressiveness, Her Smell can be an exhausting and uncomfortable watch—but that’s precisely the point. It’s an immersive and experiential approach that directly plunges us into Becky’s troubled headspace, because we’re meant to suffer along with her and those she abuses.

After the hateful energy of the first half, it is hard to swallow anything from the second, while the general goodwill towards the previously toxic Becky is tainted by ideals of the domestic.
