I'm still on Rosamund Pike-mode. Seen 4 movies with her in 6 months, on the theater. Got to be some kind of record or something. // " I don't know - 'Reality' || Sideburns - owned by the 70s. || Hamm's mom must have fed him with truckloads of Lucky Charm - he has plenty of that. [Every time Pike smiles a Panda baby is born.]
Hamm’s Very strong lead performance humanizes what could be an offputting “political” film in weaker hands by involving our emotions in the machinations of the shadiness of government intelligence during the Reagan years.
Has an okay Casablanca homage thing going on that gives way to a run-of-the-mill Middle Eastern milieu geopolitical thriller. Making a guy who doesn't kill with guns The Sympathetic Westerner is a nice trick but unfortunately all the Muslim characters have, at best, half a dimension. Should've been all Mason and Karim instead it's a bunch of spook dickheads. That this nears exemplary for its genre is sad as fuck.
1.5 Not sure why this film had to be so dark. Perhaps they hoped a lack of lighting would add mystery? There might have been an interesting original story involving Hamm's character and Kareem, but the screenplay became a geopolitical Hollywood thriller that's myopically pro-American. Pike's long blonde hair is ridiculous for the setting. Have a creepy feeling this film plays free and easy with history and Beirut.
