Baumbach has often cited Lubitsch and other masters of screwball comedy as big influences in his work. He briefly considered incorporating elements of the genre in "Kicking & Screaming" but fortunately abandoned the idea. Here, he goes full on screwball comedy, achieving mixed results. Baumbach's strength really lies on the mixture of satire with the painstaking sadness of delusion and nostalgia.
