The film, shot on location in the gateway to the west by Haskell Wexler and directed by relative newcomer Irvin Kershner (who later commandeered nothing less than The Empire Strikes Back), gave [producer and screenwriter Don] Murray the chance to brandish his skill for speechifying, offering some honorable courtroom fire-and-brimstone that might cause even Kirk Douglas to duck under a table for a spell.
