While fully expecting to groan through yet another hastily made animated feature, this was surprisingly funny. The story was predictable and tame, but there are lots of fun cinematic (and social) references to pick up on, the characters were quirky, and the animation was slick. Although, it would have been an incredible work of art had it been done in the traditional hand-drawn style of the credits.
Beautifuly designed, Hotel Transylvania builds excellent characters and universe with a nice take on monster world. I think it brings an extra layer to the behind-the-scenes-Monster-Hollywood thing. I actually had a great time watching this.
My rate: 55% - I like the idea of monsters from the myths and pop cultures come together in this hotel for monsters vacation. But it wasn't really that inspiring. Not really strong on the plot or the script and a little bit generic but it was easy enough to sit through. The younger audience would probably care for this more.
It's not a waste of time animation wise, but it surely is a waste of talent. If you like fast-paced, looney animation, fun character design, Twilight riffs, piss fetish sponges, green farts, random ass cheeks and cringeworthy rap/autotune numbers, then by golly, you've found the right film!
Although at first the choice of cast turned me off, Hotel Transylvana turned out to be a whole lot of fun. Sure it may be lacking in the deep meaning department that all modern animated films seem to thrive for, but makes up for with energy and charisma. Deffinetly a delight for children of all ages, and any horror fan who loves seeing their favorite monsters in a unique new adventure, perfect for Halloween.
