An uninspired attempt at making a twisty and tense thriller. The casting is decent but the writing is so lame the performances barely registers. To the detriment of the movie, the director has no real grasp of how to convey fear, thrills or suspense leaving the film going through the motions aping better movies at every turn.
There's a really good movie behind HATES trying to release itself, however, the attempt is not enough. Although the plot was actually surprising and wicked with all its twists, it all falls down resulting in another slasher teen movie that never manages to be horrific. Jennifer Lawrence was able to do her job as the main role but couldn't handle it alone or save the movie.
I think this film will be mostly misunderstood. Like the original Scream, the twists are predictable, but they're predictability is utilized (as in, it could never be what I think it is, and then the realization of the horror you might've known was coming) A lot more clever than it appears to be.
It's no small feat on Jennifer Lawrence's part that she comes out of this movie looking good. It drags everyone else involved down into the murky depths of schlock, but somehow she rises above it and manages to make going through the motions seem interesting.
