Didn't feel like the standard Warner Bros melodrama but despite Jean Negulesco's beautiful direction Humoresque was stunning. John Garfield was great and Oscar Levant was very fun if unsuccessful comic relief in this overtly grim-feeling story.
Impressive. Impressive how Joan Crawford - even with a supporting role - manages to steal away all the attention from the main character, that fastidious John Garfield. As to the movie itself, what a cheap melodrama. Needs more blood and poisoning bitches.
This is the ultimate movie star kitsch. Crawford is both magnificent and ridiculous. I love her more in this than in anything else, with the possible exceptions of "Grand Hotel" where she is good, "Rain" where she is true to the spirit of the piece and "Daisy Kenyon" where she is both good and true.
