Gentle and appealing performances can’t rescue this facile and cloying comedy… Ricky and Hector lurch from adventure to adventure in a series of mechanical plot twists with a calculated blend of laughter and tears, and only a final showdown with a streak of earnest danger grounds the plastic sentiment in strong emotion.

A jovial children’s fable that grapples with serious themes such as death and loneliness without being silly or dramatic. It may peak early on during a hilariously confusing eulogy from one wacky minister (played by Waititi himself), but the film is consistently endearing. For proof, see Ricky’s final bit of self-reflection to Hec: “I got carried away being an outlaw. I was having too much fun.”

Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a comedy with solid dramatic underpinnings or a drama so light on its feet that it plays like the purest comedy. Either way, the cranky charisma of the performers, plus the cheerfully idiosyncratic rhythms of Waititi’s filmmaking, keep it clicking.
