Comedy, drama, adventure, action, along with an overload of cuteness and gorg landscapes. Taika is a comedy genius. That soundtrack! Starting with the bday song auntie sang Ricky to those funky tunes Ricky jams to on his walkman (I miss mine!) The best bday gift ever? Yes, a dog. If funerals had Taika talking about all those doors, I'd love them. "Ricky Town. Population? Ricky." Oh, and Ricky's haikus? The best.
Quite wonderful film from Taika Waititi here adapting the Barry Crump novel about the unlikely friendship that develops between a seasoned bushman and a troubled youth when they inadvertently become the subject of a massive manhunt. Julian Dennison is a major find here well supported by great turns by Sam Neill and an over the top Rachel House. Darkly comic yet often moving.
A likeable film that gets lost in the bush at roughly the same moment its characters do. What starts as a charmingly weird and unpredictable family comedy becomes a painfully repetitive buddy adventure that can't sell its central contrivance. Still, for the first half hour, it's lovely. Has a nice nod to McCabe & Mrs. Miller too.
