Kristin Scott Thomas and Emmanuelle Seigner star in the new film from French auteur François Ozon, about a high-school student whose essays about a friend’s family start to blur the lines between reality and fiction — and may conceal a dark purpose.

I love how "Dans La Maison" appears to have a light atmosphere but, deep down, it is a lot more darker than it shows. Even though labeled as a comedy, I could only see a troubled, wicked young mind, a teacher who inevitably gives into his student's fantasy and dark clouds surrounding all of the characters.
A Machiavellian genius of a pupil causes all sorts of suburban trouble in an Ozon film that finds its controversial groove, and is fluent in meta-cognitive narrative construction to the point that he starts to show off a little bit. His knowingness is both the film's blessing and curse.
Claude is a charming Scheherazade with a touch of the sociopath. I just didn't believe it all. For me it had touches of that Hollywood wish-fulfillment crap I hate so much. The story and the ending just didn't live up to the praise the teacher was giving it.
It had a weird tone: sometimes it felt like a drama, then a satire, then almost a thriller... But never properly filling the requirements of a cohesive style. The plot was ok, the dynamic between student and teacher had some nice moments about it, and so did the voyeuristic approach to this mid-class family. However, to me, it was never thrilling or engaging enough as I kept on waiting for something big to happen...
The line between fiction and reality becomes irrevocably blurred in Francois Ozon's self-reflexive IN THE HOUSE, a fascinating film about a teacher who takes an interest in a talented young student's writing about his newfound relationship with his best friend's family. But as the relationship seems to grow into a dangerous obsession, the teacher must where to draw the line.
Another romp through the equally engaging and audacious terrain of Ozon. This time we are galloping along at the pace of a thriller, following the perplexing relationship between literature teacher and gifted student. Traipsing through multiple plot turns and twists it all comes together leaving us not really caring a great deal more than we did at the start. 2.5 stars
