this was fantastic. i'm a sucker for stories being told in the middle of other stories but this was so well crafted. it was entertaining just as it was suspenseful. as a viewer, you never quite knew what was going to happen or what happened was even real. ozon created characters not only that we desire to be but never quite are.
One of Ozon's better films. From the eyes of a self-confessed bitter school teacher, a young student is repeatedly berated and goaded to write a page a day on what is happening in his life. The teacher and his wife are involved, and the story unravels. Great tempo, good interaction, and as usual with Ozon, everything feels otherworldly.
Claude is a charming Scheherazade with a touch of the sociopath. I just didn't believe it all. For me it had touches of that Hollywood wish-fulfillment crap I hate so much. The story and the ending just didn't live up to the praise the teacher was giving it.
I love how "Dans La Maison" appears to have a light atmosphere but, deep down, it is a lot more darker than it shows. Even though labeled as a comedy, I could only see a troubled, wicked young mind, a teacher who inevitably gives into his student's fantasy and dark clouds surrounding all of the characters.
A Machiavellian genius of a pupil causes all sorts of suburban trouble in an Ozon film that finds its controversial groove, and is fluent in meta-cognitive narrative construction to the point that he starts to show off a little bit. His knowingness is both the film's blessing and curse.
It had a weird tone: sometimes it felt like a drama, then a satire, then almost a thriller... But never properly filling the requirements of a cohesive style. The plot was ok, the dynamic between student and teacher had some nice moments about it, and so did the voyeuristic approach to this mid-class family. However, to me, it was never thrilling or engaging enough as I kept on waiting for something big to happen...
