Synopsis

Resurgence is the inferior film because it doesn’t improve upon the first in any meaningful way except for enhancing the CGI and upgrading the weaponry.

Congratulations aren’t in order. “Independence Day: Resurgence” may be big, but to such an extent that it’s absurd. It exemplifies how the 1996 original may have changed blockbusters forever, but no longer for the better.

This isn’t a case of so-bad-it’s-good giggling; the film isn’t bad, just a bit maladroit. Emmerich has been making disaster movies for the past 20 years, and they’ve become increasingly personal: he preached climate change in The Day After Tomorrow and skewered elite one-percenters in the underrated 2012. Independence Day: Resurgence also feels personal, for better and worse – but Emmerich is also a showman and the climax is truly memorable.
