What begin as rather simple changes become increasingly more complex, trading the simple purity of the sport for a needlessly complex set of regulations that hamper movement. Football becomes an apt metaphor for life as this man tries to use his desire to reinvent the game as a way of fixing the bonds of his society.

The best testament yet to Porumboiu’s genius, as he moulds seemingly artless parts into an unexpectedly profound whole. To this end, it calls to mind Jafar Panahi’s This Is Not a Film (2011), and, more broadly, other directors working freely and contentedly in modest modes, like Matías Piñeiro, Philippe Garrel, and Hong Sangsoo.

Though Infinite Football casts a gently critical eye at its protagonist, it’s no dour portrait of a minor functionary seeking a fruitless outlet from circumscribed routine. Ginghină, like his beloved soccer ball, may be hemmed in, but he’s also alive, spirited, vibrating with potential energy.
