Film torturé, mal dirigé, mal filmé, image saccadée épuisante, musique envahissante, dialogues hystériques, scénario absurde. Après 1 h COTILLARD apparaît nue & belle, un éclair sur un océan de détritus. === Tortured, badly directed, poorly filmed, jerky image exhausting to watch, invading music, hysterical dialogues, absurd scenario. After 1 hour COTILLARD appears naked & beautiful, a flash in an ocean of trash.
The trailer misrepresented this film but that allowed many surprises in the last reel. I'm not sure it all gels but the magnificence of the performances border on silent movie close-ups repurposed for contemporary vernacular grabbed my attention like few other movies that are out there currently.
Director's cut - supposedly better. I liked it a lot. Madcap, mysterious, over-the-top - a struggle between creativity and the random unpredictability of life and love. Gainsbourg and Almaric have such chemistry. Cotillard was also incredible.
Even when he is not firing on all cylinders, Desplechin's films are engaging. Like My Golden Days, the spy subplot is not too convincing here, and a little too much is hung on Amalric's inner torment. It's an uneven film that is occasionally diverting.
Viennale, DCP _ Instead of doing the same film all over again, Desplechin took risks and reinvented himself with this crazy one - one or many actually. Ten different styles, spy, horror, comedy, Bergman-like, mixed in an epic game-hommage for the best and the worst. You can tell thay had fun doing it. First-class cast. DOP Irina Lubtschansky does a great job at switching atmospheres.
