An utterly spellbinding film about a forgotten people without a homeland (the Ruthenians) and their suffering during and after WW2. The soundtrack (which in itself is a small masterpiece with its droning soundscapes, field recordings and Orthodox church music) lends the whole thing an almost Gothic feel. First watched this on MUBI several years ago and I'm thrilled it's made a comeback (DVD impossible to get).
jana sevcikova´s documentary work is great (my favorite is "old believers"). i love the mixture of her raw camera capturing poetic moments (horses in the snow, two children at the window..) and the sadness of subjects. another great czechoslovakian female documantary director - drahomira vihanova. both highly recommended.
