It makes more sense if you (think) you know something about Brazil's often untrustworthy colonial history. It is not the first or second film about the same subject, but Marcelo Gomes not only brought a refreshing take on this historical (almost mythical) figure but also stripped the story to its bare bones to good effect. The first hour or so is slow, but promising. The last half hour is quietly terrific.
I left this movie with a strange feeling that I can't describe. Maybe it changed how I see brazilian history (thought in school, like the character describes at the opening scene) and how history really is (or at least different points of view). Marcelo Gomes did a wonderful movie with some great shots. The imagery is beautiful, it made me want to leave São Paulo and travel through Brazil. I really enjoyed the ending
