Journey to the Center of the EarthDirected byHenry Levin
***1/2. After having seen this film, you'll understand why the first scene of Steven Spielberg's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is not so original after all. I appreciated the imagery invented by the producers here like the mushroom forest or the ruins of the lost city. Even if you can't stand Pat Boone's inability to shut up or stand still whenever he sees a musical instrument, you should show it to your kids.
It takes just under an hour to get going on the expedition and that slow pacing drags the rest of the film. Mason is wonderful as always, even if he is grossly misognyistic (like Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady). Some cool set pieces if you can suspend your logic long enough. Greatest thing about this tho is watching young heartthrob Pat Boone increasingly lose his clothing as the film progresses. He's hot (literally).
A silly, fun, and at times slow film that was the first (and not last) attempt at telling this Jules Verne story. Mason does good and it's great to see him clash with Dahl on- and off-screen. Compared to the special effects filled remake with Brendan Fraser, this one actually is more concerned with plot and characters which makes it superior.
This adaptation of Jules Verne's famous work is quite different than the book. This movie is kinda lighter than the book. But it doesn't mean this movie is bad. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH still captured the spirit of the book. Maybe this movie wasn't as great as my expectation. But I still feel enjoy and excited - when watching this movie. James Mason isn't charming like in the book, but he still nailed it...
Endearingly and enjoyably daft fantasy adventure that doesn't overdo the giant monsters and volcanic eruptions like most films of this type. Also features a surprisingly charming pet duck that has more charisma than Pat Boone and the extraordinary sight of their expedition being started by Boone playing an accordion. Every journey to the centre of the Earth should have one.
